Mississippi Man Arrested in Homicide of Black Mother Found Hanging From Tree

News EditorBy News EditorSeptember 13, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

Mississippi authorities arrested Jarques Ratliff, 51, on a murder charge in connection with the death of Tasia Fortune, a 29-year-old mother of four. Fortune was found hanging from a tree behind an abandoned home in Jackson on Aug. 3. The state medical examiner classified her death as a homicide late Thursday, allowing investigators to seek arrest and search warrants. Police said the investigation remains active and that additional warrants may follow.

The case drew national attention because of Mississippi’s history of racial violence and wider public concerns about the deaths of Black Americans found hanging. Jackson police said their investigation has been guided by physical evidence and forensic findings rather than online speculation. Ratliff, who had a prior personal connection with Fortune, is being held at the Hinds County Detention Center.

Arrest follows homicide ruling

Jackson police arrested Jarques Ratliff while he was walking along Capitol Street, shortly after officers executed search warrants at properties connected to the investigation. The arrest came after the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office officially classified Tasia Fortune’s death as a homicide late Thursday. That finding provided the basis for formal arrest and search warrants after investigators spent weeks examining the circumstances of her death.

Ratliff is a Jackson resident who previously knew Fortune. Police have not publicly described the specific physical evidence they say connects him to the scene or explained the precise nature of their relationship. Authorities said the case is still developing and that further arrests remain possible as detectives pursue additional leads.

Police describe the investigative timeline

Fortune’s body was discovered Aug. 3 in the backyard of a vacant property in the 500 block of Road of Remembrance in Jackson. During the following month, investigators logged hundreds of hours of work, interviewed nearly 15 people and reviewed physical evidence. The process did not result in an arrest until the medical examiner issued the homicide classification.

Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney said officers from the department’s robbery-homicide unit moved quickly after receiving the ruling. Investigators then executed two search warrants alongside the arrest warrant for Ratliff. Brackney also said police had never officially designated a person of interest before Ratliff’s arrest, contradicting social media reports that a 65-year-old man had previously been identified as a suspect.

Officials respond to public scrutiny

The death received intense attention in Jackson and beyond, partly because it occurred in a state with a history of racialized violence. Public discussion expanded after Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., warned about what she called racial terror and modern-day lynchings while joining other Democrats in seeking a federal review of hanging deaths involving Black Americans.

Brackney acknowledged the public concern while emphasizing that investigators must rely on evidence that can be verified. She said police understood why the case was being viewed through a broader historical and national lens, but maintained that public statements must be supported by forensic facts.

“We do have a responsibility to make sure that what we say publicly is supported by our evidence and the facts,” Brackney said.

Family remembers Fortune’s life

Christy Spivey, Fortune’s mother, said police promptly informed the family about the homicide ruling and Ratliff’s arrest. Spivey expressed appreciation for the investigation and reiterated her belief that her daughter did not die by suicide. She said Fortune would never have taken her own life.

According to family members and an online obituary, Fortune grew up in Kentucky, skipped her junior year of high school and became a prominent cross-country runner. Her family described her as deeply religious. She moved to Jackson about a decade ago and had experienced homelessness in recent years, but was working to establish a cleaning business and create greater stability before her death.

Suspect faces initial court appearance

Ratliff remains in custody at the Hinds County Detention Center on a murder charge. Public defender André de Gruy said Ratliff was scheduled to appear in Jackson Municipal Court no later than Monday morning. At that hearing, officials are expected to read the formal charges and address bond conditions.

Police have not released all investigative details, including the physical evidence allegedly linking Ratliff to the location where Fortune was found. They also have not said whether additional suspects will be charged. The continuing investigation means the available account may change as warrants are served and evidence is reviewed.
