Nancy Guthrie Ransom Notes Show Writing Quirks That May Aid Investigation

News EditorBy News EditorAugust 18, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

Nancy Guthrie’s suspected kidnapping remains unresolved, but a retired Colorado investigator says two ransom notes may contain distinctive clues about their author. Lisa Miller identified repeated grammar, punctuation, spelling and word-choice patterns that could help investigators and the public recognize the sender. Authorities have not confirmed that the notes are authentic, although investigators have not ruled them out. Guthrie’s whereabouts remain unknown, and officials continue to seek information about the case.

The 84-year-old was reportedly taken from her home in northern Tucson, Arizona, during the early hours of Feb. 1, 2026. She is the mother of television presenter Savannah Guthrie. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department released the notes in July, six months after the reported disappearance, in the hope that someone would recognize the writer’s linguistic style.

Repeated grammar patterns link the two notes

Miller said the two messages appear to share several grammatical habits, particularly comma splices. A comma splice occurs when two independent sentences are joined with a comma instead of being separated by a period or another appropriate conjunction. She said the pattern appears in both notes and may indicate that one person wrote them.

The significance of the repetition is investigative rather than conclusive. If someone recognizes the same sentence structure in an acquaintance’s letters, emails or conversations, that person could provide information for investigators to assess. Miller said public awareness may also increase pressure on the author, potentially causing behavior that people close to the person notice.

Unusual compounds offer details for public recognition

Miller also pointed to the way certain compound words were written. She cited “heart related,” which would commonly be hyphenated in that context, as well as “smartwatch” and “floodlight,” which appeared as separate words. The repeated treatment of these terms across the messages was presented as another possible continuity marker.

Other details she highlighted included the use of both a dollar sign and “USD” to identify the ransom amount, along with the formatting of dates and times. None of these features identifies a person by itself, but together they could help someone recognize a familiar writing style and decide whether to contact authorities.

Personal language may reveal the writer’s background

Miller described the writer’s individual communication style as an “idiolect,” meaning the personal language patterns shaped by factors such as regional background, neighborhood, slang, education and reading. She suggested that the wording in the notes may reflect the author’s ordinary speech or writing habits rather than a deliberately constructed style.

“Idiolect is our personal style of communication,” Miller said, explaining that it can be influenced by where people grew up and the language they adopted.

She specifically discussed the use of “perished” instead of “died” and the phrase “buried in nature.” Miller said such expressions could reflect religious influences, books the writer has read or phrases used in the person’s own life. She also said a typo and the lack of a consistently smooth flow made her less likely to believe the messages were generated by artificial intelligence.

The notes remain unverified as investigators seek leads

Authorities have not publicly confirmed that the messages are genuine. However, investigators have released them while continuing to examine the circumstances of Guthrie’s disappearance, and they have asked the public to consider whether the language resembles writing they have encountered.

Guthrie was reportedly taken after a masked person appeared on doorbell camera footage outside her Tucson home. The available images have not established whether they show the same individual. Her family has indicated that the notes may be authentic, while the investigation remains open and her whereabouts are still unknown.

Rewards and tip lines remain available in the case

The combined rewards offered in the case exceed $1.2 million. The amount is intended to encourage people with relevant information to come forward, including anyone who recognizes the notes’ wording, punctuation or formatting.

Information can be reported by dialing 1-800-CALL-FBI. Anonymous tips can be submitted through 520-88-CRIME. Investigators are asking the public not to make its own accusations, but to pass potentially relevant observations to law enforcement for evaluation.
