NYC Expands Security for Jewish High Holy Days and 9/11 Anniversary

News EditorBy News EditorSeptember 9, 2026 U.S. News 4 Mins Read

New York City officials announced expanded security measures ahead of the Jewish High Holy Days and ceremonies marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said there are no specific or credible threats directed at the upcoming observances. The NYPD will increase its presence at synagogues and Jewish cultural and religious sites, while streets around Ground Zero will close for Friday’s commemoration.

Officials also highlighted rising hate crime figures, including a 9% increase in antisemitic hate crimes during the first eight months of the year. Antisemitic incidents accounted for more than half of all confirmed hate crimes citywide, according to Tisch.

Security plans for Jewish High Holy Days

The NYPD will deploy additional officers outside synagogues and at Jewish religious and cultural locations throughout New York City during September’s High Holy Days. The measures apply across all five boroughs and are intended to support Jewish residents as they attend worship services and other observances.

Mamdani said the administration considers the safety of Jewish New Yorkers a priority. The increased police presence is being put in place because of recent antisemitic incidents and the broader rise in reported hate crimes, although officials said they have not identified a specific credible threat to the celebrations.

Street closures for 9/11 anniversary

The city will close streets around Ground Zero on Friday as New York hosts ceremonies commemorating the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. The event is expected to draw dignitaries, including Vice President JD Vance, and will require security restrictions in lower Manhattan.

Mamdani urged members of the public to avoid traveling through lower Manhattan during the commemorative events. The mayor and Tisch also announced a new memorial honoring the victims of 9/11 inside the NYPD’s headquarters at 1 Police Plaza in New York.

Hate crime trends in New York City

Tisch said confirmed hate crimes across the city increased 16% during the first eight months of the year, even as shootings and murders declined to historically low levels. Antisemitic hate crimes rose 9% over the same period.

More than half of all confirmed hate crimes in New York City targeted Jewish New Yorkers, according to the commissioner. Tisch noted that Jewish residents represent about 10% of the city’s population, describing the figures as deeply disturbing.

“Even as shootings and murders have fallen to historic lows, hate crimes are moving in the wrong direction through the first eight months of this year.”

Disrupted threats and recent incidents

Tisch cited the July stabbing of Moshe Grunhaus, a 50-year-old Jewish man wearing a kippah, outside The Jewish Center on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Grunhaus was punctured with a screwdriver in the incident, which officials identified as part of the security concerns facing Jewish communities.

The commissioner also said NYPD intelligence officers have tracked and disrupted multiple plots targeting Jewish institutions in New York since October 7. Those efforts included alleged plans involving a Manhattan synagogue and a Jewish center in Brooklyn. Officials did not announce a specific threat connected to the High Holy Days.

Public reassurance and continued vigilance

Both city leaders said New Yorkers should remain alert while continuing with religious observances and anniversary events. Mamdani said there were no specific or credible threats to New Yorkers at the time of the Wednesday briefing, but emphasized that the city would maintain heightened vigilance.

Tisch said Jewish New Yorkers could rely on the NYPD during the High Holy Days and throughout the year. The department’s approach combines visible patrols at Jewish sites, intelligence monitoring and security planning for large public gatherings.
