20-Year-Old Copilot Identified in Fatal Florida Learjet Crash

News EditorBy News EditorNovember 2, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

Nathalia Gadelha, a 20-year-old aspiring commercial pilot, has been identified as the copilot aboard a Learjet 60 that crashed in a South Florida neighborhood on Sunday. All nine people aboard the aircraft were killed in the fiery crash near Cresthaven in Palm Beach County. Gadelha grew up in the area and earned her private pilot license at 17, before obtaining a driver’s license. Federal investigators are examining the aircraft’s final moments, including reports of ice accumulation, turbulence and a rapid descent.

The copilot’s identity and aviation ambitions

Nathalia Gadelha was the copilot aboard the private jet that crashed Sunday in Palm Beach County, Florida, while traveling from Texas toward the Bahamas. Her mother and stepfather confirmed her role aboard the aircraft. The crash killed every person on board and sent the aircraft into a residential area near Cresthaven.

Gadelha had been pursuing a career as a commercial airline pilot. She grew up in Palm Beach County and became known locally after earning her private pilot license at age 17 while attending West Boca Raton High School. Her early progress reflected a long-term commitment to aviation rather than a short-term interest.

Her early training and flight qualifications

Gadelha began flight lessons in 2020 and received additional instruction from her father, who had learned to fly recreationally in 2018. She accumulated 88 flight hours while working toward her private pilot license, with funding provided through the Palm Beach County school district’s Aviation Academy.

She later graduated from American Flyers, a flight school with locations in Texas and Florida. In a social media post, she described aviation qualifications held by herself and her boyfriend, including commercial, multi-engine, instrument and flight-instructor ratings. Those credentials were part of her effort to build a path toward airline employment.

The Learjet’s route and deadly crash

The Learjet 60 departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and was bound for North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the aircraft crashed at approximately 12:50 p.m. Sunday near Cresthaven, a residential area in Palm Beach County.

Video footage showed the jet descending nose-first before striking the ground and erupting into flames. The impact occurred about nine miles from Mar-a-Lago. The aircraft’s route, destination and final descent are now central parts of the investigation, although officials have not determined what caused the crash.

Flight crew reports before the impact

Air traffic control recordings indicate that the crew reported ice accumulation and turbulence before the aircraft began losing altitude. The crew requested permission to climb an additional 2,000 feet, then declared an emergency as the situation deteriorated.

“We have light, clear ice that is manageable and moderate turbulence.”

Later transmissions described a rapidly accelerating descent, including warnings that the aircraft was descending at thousands of feet per minute and was in an overspeed condition. The recordings provide investigators with a timeline of the crew’s communications, but they do not by themselves establish the mechanical or operational cause of the accident.

Investigation and emergency response

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash. Officials are expected to examine the aircraft, maintenance records, weather conditions, flight data and crew actions. The cause remained undetermined, with investigators expected to provide additional information after reviewing the available evidence.

Emergency crews closed Military Trail between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North and urged the public to avoid the area while flames consumed the wreckage. Local officials said approximately 600 people were evacuated from a nearby mobile home community. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis described the incident as cataclysmic, while Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed the deaths of all nine people aboard.
