Florida Deputy Killed Former Girlfriend and Himself After TV Dispute, Sheriff Says

News EditorBy News EditorAugust 12, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

Troy Savetz, a 47-year-old Pinellas County sheriff’s deputy, killed his former girlfriend, Mandy Fackler, and then himself after an argument over a television, authorities said. The confrontation began outside Fackler’s home in Florida on Monday, August 10, after she returned from a day at the beach with her two children. The children, ages 12 and 9, were not physically harmed and are now with their biological father. Authorities said Savetz and Fackler had an on-again, off-again relationship marked by turmoil.

The case ended a 14-year law enforcement career during which Savetz received recognition for rescuing a man from a bridge and for community service involving an abandoned pig. Officials said his actions in the killing were criminal and unrelated to his previous awards.

Confrontation outside the home

According to Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri, Savetz was waiting outside Fackler’s home at about 5:30 p.m. when she and her children returned from the beach. Savetz displayed a firearm and was angry because he wanted his television set back. When Fackler attempted to call 911, he took her phone, authorities said.

Fackler then told her children to go inside. Investigators said Savetz took her from the residence in a vehicle. Officials had not determined exactly when or where the two deaths occurred before the vehicle was located.

Children’s emergency call

The children followed their mother’s instruction and called 911 from inside the home. They provided dispatchers with information that helped authorities identify the suspect and begin an immediate search. Officials described the children as calm and exceptionally brave during the emergency.

Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco said responding officers found the mother’s vehicle at the home with a door open and located her phone. The children were later placed with their biological father and were not injured.

“You did exactly what your mom asked you to do,” Chris Nocco told the children while praising their decision to go inside and call 911.

Search and discovery of the vehicle

Authorities used K-9 teams, drones and aviation units to search for the vehicle Savetz was driving. About 90 minutes after the confrontation began, officers found it in nearby Spring Hill.

A drone showed two people inside the vehicle. Officers then approached on foot and found Savetz and Fackler dead. Investigators said the circumstances and timing of the deaths remained under review, while the children were safely removed from the scene.

Deputy’s law enforcement record

Troy Savetz had worked for the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office for 14 years and served in its marine unit. In 2014, the agency honored him for saving the life of a 24-year-old man who was at risk of jumping from a bridge.

The rescue brought recognition from the Tampa Bay Rays, who named him an everyday MVP in a 2015 social media post and invited him to throw a ceremonial first pitch. In 2018, Savetz adopted a pot-bellied pig he found while on duty. The pig, named Maple, later joined him as an ambassador for an animal welfare organization in Tampa Bay.

Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said those earlier honors did not lessen the seriousness of the alleged killings.

“The moment this individual committed a crime, he was no longer a law enforcement officer. He was a criminal,” Bob Gualtieri said.

Impact on the surviving family

Fackler’s death left her two children without their mother. Officials said they should have been preparing for the start of the school year but instead faced the immediate consequences of a family tragedy.

Nocco said the children’s prompt call gave law enforcement the information needed for the fastest possible response. Authorities and community members expressed support for the children, who were placed in the care of their father after the incident.
