Christa Pike in Critical Condition After Failed Tennessee Execution

News EditorBy News EditorOctober 1, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

Christa Pike is in critical condition after two lethal injection attempts failed during her scheduled execution in Tennessee on September 30, 2026. Her attorneys said the needle may have become dislodged or passed through a vein, preventing the drugs from being properly administered. The state has halted its remaining scheduled execution this year and ordered an independent review. Pike’s case stems from the 1995 torture and murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer.

Pike remains hospitalized in critical condition

Pike’s attorneys said Thursday that she was receiving lifesaving care at an undisclosed hospital. Attorney Randy Spivey said the legal team did not know her prognosis and could not provide additional medical information because of privacy restrictions. He confirmed that Pike was alive after the execution attempt and described her condition as critical.

Attorney Stephen Ferrell said the needle appeared either to have become dislodged or to have pierced through the vein. The attorneys did not provide a detailed medical account, and officials had not publicly released a full explanation of what happened.

“She is in critical condition receiving lifesaving care, that is the extent that we have at the moment,” Randy Spivey said.

The execution was halted after two injections

The execution took place Wednesday evening at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville, where most of Tennessee’s death row prisoners are housed. Pike received two injections, but neither dose resulted in her death. Witnesses said she remained awake, raised her head at one point and asked prison officials whether her arm was supposed to feel the way it did.

Witnesses also reported that Pike continued breathing after the second dose. The U.S. Supreme Court had rejected an emergency stay before the procedure. Pike had previously sought an alternative execution method because she feared a lethal injection could fail, but those requests were denied. The Tennessee Department of Correction also honored her request for an all-female execution team, according to her attorneys.

The case involved the 1995 killing of Colleen Slemmer

Pike was 18 in January 1995 when she, her boyfriend Tadaryl Shipp and friend Shadolla Peterson lured Colleen Slemmer from their vocational school. The group said they were going to a music store and to retrieve marijuana hidden in a nearby park. Court records said Pike attacked Slemmer after the group reached the location.

Slemmer attempted to escape, but Shipp held her down. Investigators and trial testimony described an assault involving torture, slashing, beating and a fatal blow to the head with a piece of asphalt. Pike was convicted as the organizer of the killing. She was scheduled to become the first woman executed in Tennessee since 1820.

Tennessee orders a review of the procedure

The failed execution prompted Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee to halt the state’s remaining scheduled execution this year. Lee ordered a comprehensive review by an outside party to determine how the procedure failed and whether problems with the administration of the drugs or intravenous access contributed to the outcome.

The review is expected to examine the execution process, including preparation, placement of the intravenous line, delivery of the drugs and medical monitoring. No conclusions about the cause of the failure had been announced when Pike’s attorneys spoke Thursday.

The failed execution raises questions for both families

The incident affected Slemmer’s family, which had traveled to Nashville from Florida to witness the execution, as well as Pike’s relatives and supporters. Randy Spivey said he could not imagine what the event was like for Slemmer’s loved ones or for those close to Pike.

Former Knoxville police chief Phil Keith, who discussed the original investigation, said Pike was the catalyst who planned the luring and other elements of the attack. The execution failure has now shifted attention from the long-running capital case to the state’s procedures for carrying out lethal injections.
