FBI Reports 67% Rise in Violent Crime Arrests Under Trump

News EditorBy News EditorOctober 28, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

The FBI reported more than 47,000 arrests of violent criminals and gang members during the first 21 months of the Trump administration. The agency said that figure was 67% higher than during the final 21 months of the Biden administration. It also reported a 30% decline in the national murder rate, increased arrests of violent crime suspects and the seizure of more than 4,600 kilograms of fentanyl.

The figures, released Wednesday, also covered arrests involving child sex predators and human traffickers, fugitive apprehensions and a new fraud-focused wanted list. FBI Director Kash Patel attributed the results to a stronger emphasis on field operations and cooperation with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.

The data were released as the bureau sought to highlight its enforcement priorities under President Donald Trump, whose administration has emphasized violent crime, drug trafficking and direct support for police agencies.

Violent crime arrests rise sharply

The FBI said it arrested more than 47,000 violent criminals and gang members during the first 21 months of the Trump administration. The comparison covers the same length of time at the end of the Biden administration and shows a reported 67% increase. The agency also cited a 114% increase in arrests of violent crime suspects, reflecting a broader measure than the total involving identified violent criminals and gang members.

The figures were released nationally on Wednesday and were presented as evidence that the bureau had increased enforcement activity against people believed to pose a threat to public safety. The agency did not provide a detailed breakdown by state or individual offense in the information released.

Murder and fentanyl figures draw attention

Patel said the national murder rate fell 30% during the period covered by the report. The FBI also said law enforcement seized more than 4,600 kilograms of fentanyl, a quantity the director described as potentially lethal to more than 350 million people.

The murder-rate figure and the drug seizure total were cited alongside the arrest statistics to illustrate the administration’s stated focus on violent crime and narcotics. The report characterized the decline in killings as part of the largest reduction in violent crime in United States history, according to Patel.

“Over the last 21 months under the Trump administration’s leadership and working alongside our Department of Justice and law enforcement partners, this FBI has delivered the largest reduction in violent crime in United States history,” Patel said.

Fugitive and trafficking enforcement expands

Arrests of child sex predators and human traffickers increased 13% to slightly more than 6,000, according to agency figures. Those cases formed a separate part of the FBI’s reported enforcement gains and focused on crimes involving exploitation and trafficking.

The agency also said it apprehended 10 of its 10 Most Wanted fugitives during the 21-month period. That total was described as 2.5 times the number captured during the previous four years. In addition, agents arrested six fugitives from a newly established Most Wanted Fraudsters list during its first four months.

FBI shifts emphasis toward field operations

Patel said the bureau encountered one of the highest threat environments in American history when Trump began his second term. In response, he said, the FBI placed greater emphasis on field operations and coordinated enforcement with the Justice Department and other law enforcement partners.

The operational shift was presented as a response to violent offenders, gangs, drug trafficking and other threats. It also marked an effort to demonstrate measurable activity through arrests, seizures and fugitive apprehensions rather than through policy announcements alone.

Administration links results to law enforcement support

Patel credited the reported results to presidential support for police, aggressive prosecution by the attorney general and the work of officers nationwide. The comments came after Republicans had criticized the FBI during the Biden administration over alleged political bias, government overreach and its handling of high-profile investigations.

The agency’s figures therefore served both as an account of enforcement activity and as a defense of its current direction. Patel said the results reflected cooperation among federal officials, local departments and agents working on investigations across the country.

“This is what happens with a President who backs the blue, an Attorney General who relentlessly prosecutes criminals, and good cops all over the country getting the job done,” Patel said.
