Jose Proano, 44, is charged with first-degree murder after investigators say his 71-year-old stepfather, Jorge Vazquez-Escutia, was killed and dismembered in Orlando, Florida. Vazquez-Escutia’s remains were discovered in three suitcases near his home shortly before midnight on August 4. Investigators cited security footage, cell phone location data, alleged admissions to acquaintances and injuries on Proano as part of the evidence. Proano was already on probation for an armed burglary case and is being held without bond.

Missing person report and early warning signs

Family members contacted the Orange County Sheriff’s Office in early August after finding Jorge Vazquez-Escutia’s phone, wallet and keys at his home. Investigators said his vehicles were in the driveway with their doors unlocked, which relatives considered unusual, and family members said they had not seen him for about three days. Blood-like material was reportedly observed on a fence outside the property.

Authorities also learned that friends of Jose Proano had contacted the family with an allegation that Proano said he had killed his stepfather. Deputies issued a public request for information while noting concerns about Vazquez-Escutia’s well-being, including his reported memory loss.

Security footage and the suitcase discovery

A neighbor’s security camera provided investigators with a timeline. According to court records, on the morning of August 2, a man wearing a black shirt was seen climbing over the rear wall of Vazquez-Escutia’s home. Later, the same person appeared to remove suitcases from the property and place what looked like a human arm into one of them.

At approximately 4:28 p.m., the footage showed the man carrying three pieces of luggage down the driveway. Just before midnight on August 4, deputies searched the surrounding area. One suitcase was found behind a nearby brick wall and contained a human head identified in records as belonging to Vazquez-Escutia. Two additional suitcases were located about 400 feet away along a roadway and contained tarps and other remains. Luggage tags reportedly carried Proano’s mother’s name.

Investigative evidence linking Proano to the scene

Investigators reviewed phone records and found that Proano’s phone was in the area around the time shown on the security footage. Proano had traveled from Northport, approximately 150 miles away, in the days before the discovery. Detectives asked him to meet and questioned him about his relationship with Vazquez-Escutia.

Records say Proano initially insisted that he was not the person shown in the video. He later acknowledged that his phone had been at the location. Investigators also documented scratches on his hands and arms, a large scratch on the right side of his cheek and other injuries they described as defensive in nature.

Proano reportedly described his relationship with his stepfather as negative and said he believed Vazquez-Escutia had limited his access to his mother. He also discussed schizophrenia and voices that caused him to worry about family members. Records indicate he had previously made repeated emergency calls asking authorities to check on his mother, although deputies found her safe during those visits.

Probation status and current custody

Jose Proano was charged in 2022 with multiple offenses connected to an armed burglary. Following a plea agreement, his potential sentence was reduced, and he remained on probation through 2027. The new murder charge allegedly violated the conditions of that probation, resulting in the earlier case being reopened.

Proano is being held in Orange County without bond. The first-degree murder allegation remains a criminal charge, and the evidence described in court records will be evaluated through the judicial process.

Family response and legal proceedings

A public fundraising campaign was established to help Jorge Vazquez-Escutia’s family cover funeral expenses. The campaign description portrayed him as kind, gentle and generous, emphasizing his willingness to help relatives, friends and neighbors.

A public defender representing Proano declined to comment, stating that the client had not authorized discussion of the case. The investigation and prosecution are continuing in Florida’s Ninth Judicial Circuit Court.
