Gunfire erupts at a crowded Vienna block party

The shooting occurred in Vienna, a South Georgia city about 130 miles south of Atlanta. Deputies were on patrol at a neighborhood block party when gunfire began at approximately 1:25 a.m. Sunday on Pine Street. Officials said more than 1,000 people were present and that more than 50 shots were fired at two locations separated by about one block.

The Dooly County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Sheriff Craig Peavy said people scattered in multiple directions, while additional gunfire was reported after officers arrived.

“We don’t know if it’s coming at us or someone else. You just have to keep doing what you’re doing and hope you don’t get hit by gunfire.”

Two victims are identified after the attack

Two people died at the scene from gunshot wounds. Investigators identified them as Jaquevion Jackson, 21, of Cordele, and Macaleb Jackson, 23, of Hawkinsville. Their deaths occurred during homecoming weekend for Dooly County High School, although officials said the gathering was not a school-sponsored event.

The circumstances that led to the shooting, including whether the victims were specifically targeted, had not been disclosed. Authorities also had not said whether the two deaths were connected to one another or to any dispute at the gathering.

Injured people are taken to hospitals

Thirty-five people were injured and transported to hospitals for treatment. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said the injured ranged in age from 14 to 51, with conditions ranging from stable to critical.

Most of the injuries were caused by gunfire. Several other people were struck by cars or suffered different injuries while attempting to escape the scene. The range of injuries reflected the confusion and panic that followed gunfire in a densely populated area.

Community and schools respond after the shooting

The shooting took place during a weekend associated with the local high school, raising concerns about its effect on students, families and staff. Dooly County School System Superintendent Sherrod Willaford said the event was not organized or sponsored by the school system, but acknowledged that its consequences could extend into the school community.

Schools were scheduled to open Monday, with additional safety measures put in place. Vienna Mayor Eddie Daniels said the city had not issued a permit for the block party and that he did not know whether it was specifically a homecoming celebration.

Investigators seek suspects and a motive

No suspects had been arrested at the time of the report. Authorities had not identified a possible motive or established how many shooters may have been involved. The investigation remained active, with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation assisting local deputies in examining the shooting and identifying those responsible.

Sheriff Craig Peavy urged anyone involved to surrender while investigators continued working to determine what happened. The case follows another recent shooting in Macon, about 50 miles north along the Interstate 75 corridor, where 12 teenagers were wounded during a confrontation at a birthday party in a city park.
