Former Knoxville Chief Says Colleen Slemmer Murder Still Haunts Investigators

News EditorBy News EditorOctober 3, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

More than three decades after the murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a former Knoxville police chief says the case remains deeply disturbing for investigators. Phil Keith, who led the Knoxville Police Department from 1988 to 2004, said memories of the crime scene remain vivid. Christa Pike, convicted of leading the torture and killing, survived two doses of lethal-injection drugs during a failed execution attempt. Pike was later reported to be critically ill, unconscious and receiving breathing assistance.

The killing took place in 1995 after Slemmer was lured from the Knoxville Job Corps Center by Pike and two other students. The case drew attention because of the prolonged violence, the involvement of multiple young people and evidence described at trial as having satanic elements.

A murder that left lasting memories

Keith said the 1995 investigation remains one of the most disturbing cases he encountered during a law-enforcement career that included serving as Knoxville’s police chief for 16 years. He described the crime scene as exceptionally graphic and said the images have remained with investigators for 31 years.

“I’ll remember this case to the day I die.”

Keith said the memories remain accessible decades later, describing the scene as something he can still see when he closes his eyes. His comments came as public attention shifted to Pike’s execution and her medical condition after the procedure failed.

How Slemmer was lured and attacked

Colleen Slemmer was 19 and attending the Knoxville Job Corps Center, a vocational program for troubled youths, when she was approached by Christa Pike and two classmates. The group reportedly told Slemmer they wanted to go to a music store and retrieve marijuana they had hidden in a park.

Instead, prosecutors said, Slemmer was taken to an isolated location and attacked for nearly an hour. The assault included beatings, cutting and gagging. When she attempted to flee, the group restrained her, and she was ultimately killed after her skull was crushed with a piece of broken asphalt.

Evidence presented at trial

Pike was 18 when the killing occurred and was later convicted of leading the attack. Trial evidence indicated that she kept a fragment of Slemmer’s skull and displayed it to classmates before her arrest. Pike’s boyfriend, who was also convicted, was 17 at the time and therefore did not face the death penalty. Evidence also showed that he carved pentagrams into Slemmer’s chest and face.

A trial expert testified that the crime had what were described as satanic elements and reflected collective aggression, a phenomenon in which a group becomes emotionally aroused and engages in extreme violence. Murray Marks, a University of Tennessee forensic anthropologist, testified about the wounds to Slemmer’s skull. A university groundskeeper who found the remains initially believed he had encountered an animal carcass before recognizing clothing and blood.

The failed execution attempt

Christa Pike was scheduled to be executed on a Wednesday in October 2026. A federal appeals court briefly issued a stay after a last-minute appeal, but the U.S. Supreme Court lifted it, allowing the lethal-injection procedure to proceed.

After two doses of lethal-injection drugs, Pike remained alive and was taken to an undisclosed hospital. Her attorneys, Stephen Ferrell and Luke Ihnen, said she was critically ill, unconscious, intubated and receiving assistance from a ventilator. They said she had significant injuries to both arms and was being treated for serious effects linked to the pentobarbital administered during the attempt.

Concerns about trauma support

Keith said Knoxville investigators did not have access to formal therapy services or counseling after the murder. He expressed regret that modern post-trauma support was not available to officers who processed the scene and worked on the investigation.

“We didn’t have therapy services or counseling or anything at that time, and I wish we had, because these images will never be erased.”

Randy Spivey, one of Pike’s attorneys, also acknowledged the suffering experienced by Slemmer’s family and by people close to both women. He said the circumstances surrounding the failed execution were distressing and should not happen again.
