Florida Deputy Kills Former Girlfriend After TV Dispute, Then Dies by Suicide

News EditorBy News EditorAugust 12, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

A Florida sheriff’s deputy killed his former girlfriend after confronting her over a television and then died by suicide, authorities said. The incident happened Monday after the woman returned home from a day at the beach with her two children. The children, ages 12 and 9, followed their mother’s instructions to go inside and call 911. Both were unharmed and are now with their biological father.

The case involved Troy Savetz, a 47-year-old member of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office marine unit, and Mandy Fackler, who was identified by friends as the victim. Officials said the former couple had an on-again, off-again relationship marked by conflict.

Confrontation at the home

Troy Savetz was waiting outside Mandy Fackler’s home when she and her children returned at about 5:30 p.m. Monday, according to Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri. Authorities said Savetz displayed a firearm and was angry because he wanted his television set back.

When Fackler attempted to call 911, Savetz took her phone. She then told her children to go inside. Investigators said the confrontation led to Fackler being taken away in a vehicle driven by Savetz. Authorities later found both adults dead inside that vehicle.

“The moment this individual committed a crime, he was no longer a law enforcement officer. He was a criminal,” Bob Gualtieri said.

Children’s emergency call

The children followed their mother’s instructions and called 911 from the home. Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco said they provided dispatchers with information needed to identify the suspect and respond quickly.

When deputies arrived, they saw Fackler’s vehicle with a door open and found her phone at the residence. The children remained physically unharmed. Officials praised them for staying calm and obeying their mother during a rapidly developing armed encounter.

“You did exactly what your mom asked you to do,” Chris Nocco told the children through reporters. He said their mother had told them to go inside, save their lives and call 911.

Search and discovery of the vehicle

Authorities launched a coordinated search after determining that Fackler was no longer at the home. The response included K-9 teams, drones and aviation units, with officers looking for the vehicle Savetz was driving.

About 90 minutes after the confrontation began, officers located the vehicle in nearby Spring Hill. A drone helped authorities see two people inside. Officers then approached on foot and found Savetz and Fackler dead. Investigators said they were still determining the exact timing of the two deaths.

Deputy’s prior public honors

Troy Savetz had worked for the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office for 14 years and served in its marine unit. In 2014, the agency honored him for saving a 24-year-old man who was attempting to jump from a bridge in Pinellas County.

The rescue brought public recognition from the Tampa Bay Rays, who named him an “Everyday MVP” in a 2015 social media post and invited him to throw a ceremonial first pitch. In 2018, the sheriff’s office also highlighted his adoption of a pot-bellied pig he had found while on duty. The animal, named Maple, later became an ambassador for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Tampa Bay.

Official response and family impact

Officials said Savetz’s previous service and honors did not lessen the seriousness of the killings. Bob Gualtieri described the conduct as inexcusable and said Savetz’s actions immediately ended his identity as a law enforcement officer.

The death of Fackler left her two children without their mother. Chris Nocco said they should have been preparing for the start of the school week but instead faced life after the loss. The children are staying with their biological father while authorities continue documenting the case.

Summary

Authorities say a dispute between former partners escalated into a fatal armed confrontation in Florida.
