Monsoon Rains Prompt Renewed Search Near Nancy Guthrie’s Tucson Home

News EditorBy News EditorAugust 6, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

Nancy Guthrie’s Tucson neighborhood was reportedly searched again as investigators continue examining the 84-year-old’s unexplained disappearance. A nearby resident said she saw law enforcement personnel searching desert brush behind Guthrie’s home in the Catalina Foothills. A retired sheriff’s lieutenant said recent monsoon rains may have moved rocks, vegetation or other potential evidence. Authorities say the investigation remains active, with leads and extensive video still under review.

Guthrie, the mother of television journalist Savannah Guthrie, is believed by authorities to have been taken by force from her Tucson residence in the early hours of February 1, 2026. The case has remained unsolved, and the combined reward for information has exceeded $1.2 million.

Reported return to the Catalina Foothills

A neighbor who lives several homes from Guthrie’s residence said she saw federal investigators return to the brush behind the home shortly before the six-month point in the case. The resident said she recognized some of the personnel from earlier law enforcement activity connected to Guthrie’s disappearance and saw them moving through the desert terrain.

A spokesperson for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said no task force investigators had recently returned to the area. Federal authorities had not immediately commented on the reported search. The conflicting accounts could not establish the precise timing, scope or purpose of the activity.

Why investigators may have revisited the area

Bob Krygier, a retired Pima County sheriff’s lieutenant and former SWAT commander, said a renewed search could reflect a new tip, a specific lead or a decision to review a previously examined location. Investigators may also bring fresh personnel to a long-running case to reassess evidence and search patterns.

“There’s a couple of different reasons that go through my mind. First is going to be they got some leads, they got some new tips that are viable, and they’re out there looking for something specific.”

Krygier said investigators likely had already searched portions of the neighborhood, but a new development could justify returning to a particular area. The reported activity occurred in the same Catalina Foothills neighborhood where Guthrie was last known to be before her suspected abduction.

Monsoon flooding can change the landscape

Krygier also pointed to Tucson’s monsoon season as a possible reason for renewed attention to washes and desert brush. Heavy rainfall can alter drainage channels, dislodge rocks and move branches or other objects. Those changes may expose material that was previously covered or carry it away from its original location.

“About a month ago, monsoon season started here in Tucson and a lot of water has come down, a lot of water at once, and it pushes things.”

He said floodwaters in some areas can rise from a few inches to as much as 12 feet. Fast-moving water may sweep away vehicles, trees, rocks and people, creating difficult conditions for investigators attempting to determine whether an object or disturbance is connected to a case.

The investigation remains active

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said investigators continue following active leads and reviewing tens of thousands of videos. He has said authorities do not consider the case cold. The investigation involves Guthrie’s disappearance from Tucson and efforts to determine what happened to her after she was believed to have been taken from her home.

Authorities have not publicly identified a suspect or explained whether the reported neighborhood search produced evidence. Requests for additional comment were not immediately answered. The absence of a confirmed result from the reported activity means its investigative significance remains unknown.

Ransom notes and public appeals

The sheriff’s office recently released two purported ransom notes in an effort to identify the sender through distinctive language. Officials are asking members of the public who recognize the wording or have information about Guthrie’s disappearance to contact investigators.

The combined rewards in the case total more than $1.2 million and remain unclaimed. Tips can be submitted to the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI. Anonymous information can also be provided to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-88-CRIME.
