Colorado Man Sentenced After 100-Mph Chase and Porch Hideout

News EditorBy News EditorNovember 3, 2026 U.S. News 5 Mins Read

Zakary Dean Hirschfield, 24, of Centennial, Colorado, was sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to felony eluding of a peace officer. The case followed a January pursuit that began during a traffic stop in Castle Pines and reached speeds exceeding 100 mph. Authorities said Hirschfield drove toward a deputy, crashed into another vehicle and fled into a Littleton neighborhood. Deputies later found him hiding beneath a porch while wearing only his underwear.

The pursuit prompted a coordinated search involving dozens of deputies, specialized units, drones and a K9 team. Authorities also said cocaine and drug paraphernalia were found in the vehicle Hirschfield abandoned after the crash.

Traffic stop turns into dangerous pursuit

The incident began in January when a Douglas County sheriff’s deputy stopped Hirschfield for speeding in Castle Pines. During the stop, authorities said Hirschfield suddenly accelerated toward the deputy, forcing the officer to jump out of the way. Radio traffic captured the deputy reporting that the driver had tried to hit him.

A female passenger was inside the vehicle and screamed as Hirschfield drove away, authorities said. She later told deputies that she repeatedly urged him to stop. Instead, the vehicle sped through Highlands Ranch and Littleton, where authorities said Hirschfield exceeded 100 mph, crossed medians and drove against traffic.

Crash triggers coordinated manhunt

The pursuit moved through areas with nighttime traffic as deputies followed with emergency lights activated. Authorities said Hirschfield eventually crashed into another vehicle. After the collision, he abandoned both the damaged vehicle and his passenger before running into a nearby neighborhood.

The crash changed the operation from a vehicle pursuit to a ground and aerial search. Dozens of deputies, specialized units, drones and a K9 team searched the Littleton area. Thermal drone footage showed a person moving through trees and brush while aerial personnel tracked the search from above.

Deputies find suspect beneath porch

About an hour after the original traffic stop, deputies located Hirschfield beneath a raised porch, authorities said. He was wearing only his underwear. Body camera footage showed deputies approaching the wooden structure with flashlights before taking him into custody.

As officers restrained Hirschfield on the ground, one deputy ordered him to place his hands behind his back. A search of the abandoned vehicle later uncovered cocaine and drug paraphernalia, according to authorities. The evidence added to the seriousness of an incident that had already placed deputies, motorists and residents at risk.

“Don’t run from our deputies. We will catch you and hold you accountable.”

Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly said the case demonstrated that dangerous flight from law enforcement would not be tolerated in the county.

Earlier cases raised questions about release decisions

Douglas County District Attorney George Brauchler criticized earlier court decisions involving Hirschfield. Prosecutors said an Arapahoe County judge placed him on probation and ordered community service in November 2024 after a plea agreement that resulted in a conviction for attempted distribution of fentanyl.

His probation was revoked less than three months later, but prosecutors said he was placed back on probation in June 2025. A further motion to revoke probation was filed on August 19, 2025, the same day Hirschfield was released without posting cash bail in Jefferson County on a new felony robbery charge. Five months later, prosecutors said, he led deputies on the high-speed chase.

George Brauchler said the case reflected the consequences of decisions by other law enforcement agencies and courts that had opportunities to keep Hirschfield in custody before the pursuit.

Guilty plea brings five-year prison term

Hirschfield pleaded guilty to felony eluding of a peace officer and received a five-year prison sentence. The conviction resolved the criminal case arising from the pursuit, while the evidence from the vehicle and the earlier court history formed part of the broader account presented by prosecutors.

Deputy District Attorney Zach Idris said the defendant had put countless lives at risk during the chase. He credited the sheriff’s office with locating Hirschfield and said the prison term would give him time to reflect on the consequences of his actions.

George Brauchler issued a final warning that people should not commit crimes, rather than seek jurisdictions perceived as more lenient.
